A Positive Attitude Trumped Aptitude

At the invitation of Dr. Beth Blakely, I wrote and delivered a 45 minute, keynote speech to the Placer County Chapter of the ABWA on August 10, 2010, entitled "The Power of a Positive Attitude."  I enjoyed delivering this speech because it gave me the opportunity to talk about something that can often be taken for granted---that having a posivite attitude can be just as important, sometimes even more so, than having the right aptitude.

When I was in graduate school, I dreaded, and I mean absolutely dreaded, taking statistics.  I dreaded it so much that I left it as one of my last classes to take before I graduated.  Even the thought of having to take statistics made me grouse.  After all, I was a communicator.  I was a thinker.  I was made to work with people directly.  What use did I have for statistics?  Well, maybe none, I thought, but in order to graduate with Masters Degree in hand, I had to come to grips with taking the class.

And, that is exactly what I did.  I not only came to grips with it.  I made a game out of it.  I made a deal with myself.  Every statistics lecture I made it through without falling asleep would equal another round of golf I could play.  Every statistics test I passed with a B or better, I would allow myself to purchase a new piece of jewelry, and boy how I love my jewelry!  The thought of a reward turned my sour attitude into a more positive attitude, and guess what?  No, I didn't pass the class with an A, but I passed the class with a B; I improved my golf swing; and, I now have a nice little jewelry collection going.  And, oh, yes, I did end up getting that Master's Degree.  alt

Sometimes, a positive attitude is hard to come by. But, I tell you what---striving for one has never failed me yet.

The All America City Experience

Last week, I had the honor to participate with the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce, the Cordova Community Council and the city of Rancho Cordova, in the country-wide competition through the National Civic League to compete to have Rancho Cordova named as an "All-America City."  The competition was held in Kansas City, Missouri, and I was asked to represent the business community of Rancho Cordova, in a terrific production, themed "We Make the Magic," which we performed in front of approximately 200 people.

Out of approximately 400 cities that applied for the honor, and of the 25 that were actually invited to compete, I am proud to say that Rancho Cordova was indeed 1 of 10 cities selected as an "All-America City." alt

Teamwork happens to be one of my favorite ways in which to work, and I am delighted to say that this experience was no exception.   It was a rewarding, unbelievably eye-opening experience to see how much civic pride that people across this great nation have in their individual cities.  And, I was no exception.  Having grown up in Rancho Cordova, and still with deep roots there, I must say, I'm proud to have had, even a slight part, in bringing the "All-America" crown back home.

All- America City Competiton

I am privileged to have been asked to participate as a delegate on behalf of the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce with the City of Rancho of Cordova as they compete to become the National Civic League's 2010 "All- America City."  Our delegation, comprised of leaders of the city of Rancho Cordova, like Shelly Blanchard and Ted Gaebler and other members of the community will be traveling to Kansas City, Missouri, June 15-19, 2010.  The possibility of bringing home the title of "All-America City" for Rancho Cordova is an exciting prospect.  I'll write about my experience when I return.
